Aston Villa set to sign €5.75m Italian international free agent

Aston Villa Sign

Reports in Italy suggest Aston Villa are leading the chase for Gaetano D'Agostino.

The Transfer Window may be shut, but that does not mean the market closes just yet. While the big sellers may have shut their doors and taken their remaining goods home, the independent traders are up late wheeling and dealing, trying to get themselves a bargain after hours.

One such man is said to be Paul Lambert. The Aston Villa boss has seen his side have a great start to the season and he also pulled off a great last minute loan-deal for Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley.

But he has not stopped there. Reports in Italy claim that Villa are leading the race to snap up 32-year-old midfielder Gaetano D'Agostino on a free transfer.

The playmaker terminated his contract with Siena at the end of last season as the club went into bankruptcy and he has serious pedigree in the game.

Fiorentina once splashed out €5.75 million to co-own the player with Udinese and in 2009 he featured five times for the Italian national team.

But now a free transfer it is believed Aston Villa are leading the race for his signature, ahead of two team from Turkey.

He was asked about Aston Villa's interest by Tutto Mercato Web this morning, to which he responded:

"For my future I'm waiting, meanwhile I train with my personal trainer waiting to choose the most suitable team. At 32, I can not choose, for me it is important to choose a project, a healthy society to have fun and have professional success."

Aston Villa have had a great start to the season, but Lambert knows the squad size is still a concern, and is hoping to ass improvements when ever he can.

And when a player of this quality is available for nothing you can understand why Aston Villa are considering making a move.

Is D'Agostino a good option for Aston Villa?
