Three potential Aston Villa free-agent targets after failure to sign Canales

We show three free-agents that Aston Villa could sign to make up for missing out on Sergio Canales on deadline day.

One of the more intriguing chases on transfer deadline day was Aston Villa's pursuit of Real Sociedad's Sergio Canales.

The Spanish creative midfielder was heralded as one of his nation's finest prospects as a youngster, but a glut of promising number 10's in his homeland have kept him out on international recognition, whilst his club form has dwindled.

That said, there have been signs that he could be getting back to his best and had Villa managed to sign the 23-year-old he would undoubtedly added flair to their side.

As it was, Canales rejected the opportunity to move to the Premier League and opted to stay with Sociedad, but if Paul Lambert is looking for a technically adept midfielder to add to his squad there are still plenty of free agents out there who could fit the bill.

In this piece we take a look at three cheap options which Villa could take a look at.

Florent Malouda

The French midfielder is well known to English football fans following his spell at Chelsea in his younger days.

Now, 34, he doesn't posses the speed and athleticism that he once did, but his experience could be key and he still has a lot to offer.

Last season he was based in Turkey with Trabzonspor and scored five goals in 19 games, proving that he still has an eye for goal, and he could offer a short-term solution for Villa.

Sotiriis Ninis

Once touted to be the future of Greek football, Sotiris Ninis has struggled in recent times and the fact he is searching for a club represents this fact.

That said, there can be no questioning his talent. Ninis possesses an array of skills and can dazzle defences with his ability on the ball, but he needs another chance.

At 24-years-old he has plenty of time to develop still and on a free, after his contract at Parma expired, he may well be worth the risk.

Ronaldinho

The Brazilian legend is still looking for a club and, although he may not be the player he was once was, his arrival would certainly create excitement around Villa Park.

The 34-year-old is one of the finest players in recent memory and, despite it being the twilight of his career, his signing would likely pay for itself through merchandising and advertising potential.

Ronaldinho has made 45 appearances, scoring 16 times, for Atletico Mineiro in the past two seasons and if Paul Lambert could rekindle any of the old magic which he showed during his Barcelona days then the South American superstar would be a brilliant addition to the Premier League.
