Bayern Munich's summer transfer dealings have been called into question by German legend Lothas Matthaus.
The World Cup winning player and manager believes the decision to sign Xabi Alonso was only the third best option of their midfield scenarios.
He told SportBILD: "I was surprised because they lost in this position a German world champion to Real Madrid.
"For the salary that now Alonso gets, Kroos would probably have stayed."
Not only is he unhappy with that, he considers poorly thought out scenario, he feels Bayern erred in their choice of replacement.
"Khedira was a favoured at Bayern, but not by Guardiola. Bayern are a bit astray, but that is their right."
Khedira is four years younger than Alonso, but with his injury bad luck hitting again this week, ruled out for 6-8 weeks with a thigh problem, Bayern may still have made the best bet.
It is easy to criticise Bayern over the Kroos saga, but they only decided to go in for Alonso after Javi Martinez suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury.
Had this happened prior to Kroos' sale, they may have gone the extra mile to keep the midfielder, and worked a deal ultimately cheaper or on par with signing and paying Alonso.
