A New Era of Elegance
When it comes to evening wear, the rules have changed. And the new rule is: break the rules. Dresses that caught our attention on the red carpet have moved from girly garments to all-out daring designs.
Skater style – fashion's hottest trend
Once upon a time, in the dim and distant past – around 2010 – you were no one on the front row of a fashion show unless you were dressed up to the nines. Eveningwear was quite acceptable at 9am, couture was alpha-wear and 5in heels were the minimum requirement. Fastforward to the autumn/winter 2013 shows. Fashion editors sprang from one event to another wearing hightop trainers, while the humble sweatshirt was preferred over any ballgown. Fashion, you see, has loosened up. Forget extreme heels and cocktail dresses. Trainers (Air Max) and sweatshirts (Givenchy) are now the waiting-list items and the tomboy – as interpreted by Cara Delevingne – has replaced glamourpuss as the feminine ideal.

Lauren Laverne on fashion: shopping with a conscience
"What is a cynic? A man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing." Oscar Wilde's famous quote keeps coming back to me at the moment. I have thought of it over and over in the wake of the Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh. More than 1,120 bodies were removed from the rubble of the eight-storey complex. For some, the Rana Plaza tragedy is a matter of criminality, and indeed there have been multiple arrests, including engineers who are alleged to have illegally added several shoddily constructed floors to the building, and the factory owner who is said to have ordered employees to work the morning of the collapse, after safety concerns had been raised.

Rick Edwards on fashion: sunglasses
As I write, there is a hint of sunshine outside, heralded as ever by British wags on Twitter saying funny things like: "What's that ball of fire in the sky? We're all going to die." And since this column is pretty optimistic, I'm going to take a chance and discuss sunglasses. Now, the problem with sunglasses is two-fold. First, they break with alarming ease and regularity. Secondly, I misplace them with alarming ease and regularity. In fact it's probably fair to say that it is me who has the problem. Careless and clumsy.
