Lauren Laverne on fashion: see-through plastic
Hans Christian Andersen's tale of the emperor's new clothes is often used to mock the artifice of fashion. How unfair. After all, there are no actual clothes in it. It's really more an illustration of the importance of speaking truth to power, or a handy example of the phenomenon of pluralistic ignorance. It is synonymous with fashion, though, which lends a pleasing irony to a trend that is – if not entirely invisible – at least transparent: Perspex. From Burberry and Gucci to Chanel, the summer runways were agleam with the stuff, and the look has hit the high street.

Designer handbags: the new 'price backlash'
Hands up if you think designer handbags are stupidly expensive? Of course you do: it's hard to argue otherwise when they come with four-figure price tags. So the news that Joseph – long-time purveyor of sleek and realistic fashion – is launching its debut handbag collection at Selfridges from today is most welcome. They're brilliant and they're a third of the price of most designer bags. Clutches are around £200 and shoppers about £400.
Lauren Laverne on fashion: holiday packing
I'm not the best person to advise you on holiday chic. I can't do chic travel. Or louchely glamorous travel, like Kate Moss lolling atop a super yacht with a fag on the go. I'm just back from holiday. I was assembling Lego as our plane took off, and the only thing I wished I'd packed was a pair of rubber gloves (the lone spray cleaner available was not kind to naked hands. To paraphrase a noted philosopher: "Bang! And your skin is gone!")
A Gift For the Heart

Beauty: timesavers
I think people assume I spend hours a day putting on makeup. Understandable, given my job, but in reality far from the truth. I'm a single mother of two small boys and live 70 miles from most meetings where I need to look half-decent, so I spend many mornings in a state of extreme flap.
Lauren Laverne on fashion: wedding dresses
I love a wedding. What's unadorable about a day that begins with profound declarations of devotion closely followed by lunchtime booze and cake, and ends with you dancing to Chic with a handsy usher? I attended my first this year a few weekends ago, when the snow was still sparkling on the branches of the trees outside. The happy occasion prompted me to consider wedding style, the best of which – for me – is on the affordable side.
