Golf is a game of confidence. Ian Poulter has plenty and Tiger Woods has none, a story written in the bold ink of a Players Championship leaderboard on Thursday showing the Englishman at the head of the pack and the American 100th, nowhere in other words.

Genius is hard to argue against, with its capacity for wonder and surprise. If it were not, then the story of Tiger Woods would be well into its third and final act by now; the part where it all goes wrong for the man himself and the world around him is reconciled to the reality of greatness reduced to the ranks of mediocrity.

This public pursuit of perfection is in danger of becoming Tiger Woods's epitaph. At least, it would be if Woods really was as near to making a breakthrough on golf's biggest stages as he would have onlookers believe.

There are those who believed Tiger Woods had done it all in golf. Presumably such a theory was diminished with even occasional glances towards the former world No1's second-round performance in the 76th Masters.

No one in professional golf knows Tiger Woods better than Mark O'Meara and after two days spent together practising at Augusta National for this week's Masters no one is more bullish on the former world No1's chances of winning a major championship for the first time in almost four years.

In the world of top-class professional golf unanimity is rare but there was plenty of agreement around at the halfway stage of last year's PGA Championship after Tiger Woods played dreadfully to miss the cut at the Atlantic Athletic Club. A fleet of double-decker buses would not have been enough to accommodate the "experts" leaving the course that day who would have been happy to write the obituary of an extraordinary career.

Gary Player has sufficient major championship experience to identify the prospect of a fascinating duel. With the start of the 76th Masters now only days away, the South African offers a strong assessment of Rory McIlroy's ability to compete in any such situation alongside Tiger Woods.

Tiger Woods is a winner again, the new favourite for the coming Masters at Augusta and, perhaps most significantly, the man to beat in golf. The former world No1, without an official victory anywhere in the world since his career and reputation were ripped apart by personal scandal in November 2009, looked remarkably like his former self on Sunday as he cruised to a five-shot victory at the Bay Hill Invitational in Orlando.

The relief was obvious and so was the message sent from the final green at Bay Hill on a throwback Sunday afternoon. Tiger Woods, the lost soul of professional golf, is back, a champion again after securing his first official PGA Tour victory for two and a half years.
