Standards have been set when it comes to golden couples of stage and screen. Half a century ago, when Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton met on the set of Cleopatra, then the most expensive movie ever made, the powerful personal chemistry was immediately clear. In consequence, the love of the two British-born stars is now almost as fabled as the story of Antony and Cleopatra itself.

Was there not a clause in Michael Jackson's last will and testament requesting that his children should, until they came of age, be brought up at least vaguely in the manner he would have wanted? Lost in Showbiz is moved to ask because his 16-year-old son, Prince Michael Jackson, has used the past month to make his debut as a showbiz reporter for Entertainment Tonight, guest star in an episode of 90210, and announce that he is also "looking to become well-rounded as a producer, director, screenwriter and actor". Obviously, none of us can second guess with total accuracy what Prince Michael's father would have wanted. But given that he required his children to wear masks or full veils in any public place, perhaps we could hazard the answer: "Not this."

Lost in Showbiz confesses it intends to skirt over the matter of Beyoncé's alleged miming of The Star Spangled Banner. When it comes to artists miming, LiS always finds itself recalling the sage words of Sir Cliff Richard after Liza Minnelli was alleged to have lip-synched her way through her 2002 Royal Albert Hall comeback show: "It is so much more difficult to mime than to actually sing because you have to step back and realise you can't give it your all because it won't look right because you are miming." It remembers those words and nods to itself: yes, Sir Cliff, that is probably why people mime onstage, isn't it? To make it more difficult for themselves.

Inter-generational Twitter feuds, alleged abductions and the direst allegations of false imprisonment of an elderly parent; world-famous siblings embroiled in protracted legal battles that recall Jarndyce and Jarndyce; and at the centre of it all, at the eye of a ghastly familial hurricane, lies a musical legend – the foremost musical legend of the past 40 years – who at his death had accumulated debts nearing half a billion dollars but who now, after three years as a corpse, and thanks to astute management of his estate and back catalogue, will soon once more be awash in accountants' black ink.
