Atari blew it. At the start of the eighties, the manufacturer of the world's best-selling console allowed its market to be flooded with mediocre games, published by reckless and cynical third-parties. Meanwhile, the company over-hyped and over-manufacturered its own monstrosities, the likes of ET and the awful VCS conversion of Pac-Man produced in their multi-millions. Then in 1983, amid other contributing factors, the console industry collapsed.

The aesthetic point of headphones you'd wear in the street used to be discretion. The idea was that other people didn't really notice them, the wisdom of which idea was underlined when the iPod arrived with its attention-grabbing white earbuds, which muggers took as visual shorthand for, "I have about my person an expensive piece of new technology. Please relieve me of it at knife-point." And yet, recently, the aesthetic point of headphones you'd wear in the street seems to have changed: people (men, mostly) are wearing increasingly immense, colourful over-ear cans in public.

What's your favourite piece of technology, and how has it improved your life?I would say the vibrator, and it's done wonders for my marriage! No, my favourite piece of technology is the iPad. My wife has one, and I'm foolishly waiting for the next one to come out. I love technology, and I love new gadgets. I can no longer figure out how to use any of them, but I love them.
