Michael Winner: A Unique Restaurant Critic

Michael Winner was not as other restaurant critics. The fact was, he didn't really give a toss about the food, as long as it wasn't too demanding or showy. For him it was about the room and the service. Most of all it was about Michael Winner, and whether he was having an utterly terrific time. He was Mr Toad of The Wind in The Willows made flesh. And how could you not like Mr Toad?

Duck & Waffle, Bishopsgate

The influence of the US, particularly New York, on London’s bar and restaurant scene is evident everywhere you look. From Dalston’s grungy dive bars, to Shoreditch’s speakeasy cocktail clubs and Soho’s diners, Americana has quietly and successfully seeped its way into our drinking and eating conscious. However a new, and perhaps surprising, influence is that flash upstart of the East – Hong Kong.

Dine Differently in London

Our love of food and dining dates back to Ancient Rome. This important aspect of human social interaction has, consequently, had an age to develop, mature, and become a way of life. It brings us together like nothing else: sitting around the table talking and chewing! In London we are privileged to enjoy a plethora of places to dine. Why not explore a few ways to dine differently in our blessed Capital, tried and tested by yours truly.

The great divide

The great divideIt should come as no surprise I'm not a fan of group activities. And going out to eat with a group of people is particularly stressful. When it comes to splitting a bill, there should be a rule that everyone knows to observe. Like covering your mouth when you sneeze. If there is someone who does not drink at all and the group does, the sober person should not have to cover for those who do. If we were out at a bar, I wouldn't be expected to pay for everyone else's drinks. Why should it be any different at a restaurant?

Restaurant review: The Devonshire Arms

Restaurant review: The Devonshire ArmsThe Devonshire Arms, Beeley, Derbyshire (01629 733 259). Meal for two, including wine and service, £100This will look like a vendetta. It's not. It's ignorance, though of a respectable Lefty kind. When, a few weeks ago, I slagged off the Devonshire Arms Brasserie at Bolton Abbey it didn't for a moment occur to me that the word Devonshire in the title denoted ownership by the Duke and Duchess of same. So when I decided to review another pub called the Devonshire Arms, this time on the edge of the Duke's Chatsworth Estate, I didn't realise I was honouring his lucky Grace with my opinions for the second time in about a month.
